Hydrostatic Testing FAQ's

What is Hydrostatic Testing or Hydro Test

The process of hydrostatic testing typically involves filling the equipment with water and pressurizing it to a predetermined test pressure. The equipment is then visually inspected for any leaks or deformities.

Why is hydrostatic testing important?

Hydrostatic testing is important to ensure the safety and reliability of equipment. It can help detect any weaknesses or defects in the equipment that could result in failure or accidents and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.

How often is a hydrostatic testing (re-qualification) required?

This depends on the rating of the cylinder and the date it was last tested.  The month and year of each hydro test is stamped onto the cylinder between a letter and four numbers identifying the tester.  It is 3, 5, or 10 years from this date that the next hydro test is due.

 Is hydrostatic testing safe?

Yes, hydrostatic testing conducted by Premier Hydro Testing is done with safety as a top priority. Our team of experts adhere to strict safety protocols to ensure that the testing process is carried out safely.

What types of defects can hydrostatic testing detect?

Hydrostatic testing can detect defects such as cracks, leaks, and deformations in equipment. It is a critical process that helps ensure the safety and reliability of equipment.

What happens if the cylinder fails?

In the unlikely circumstance that the cylinder fails the inspection or hydro test, a test report will be provided to the customer. Test report will include the cylinder's serial number, manufacturer, and cylinder type. At this time the cylinder will be marked as condemned and will not be returned to service. The cylinder will be destroyed or the serial number will be X'd out. Test report and information will be logged into the system along with the failure details. The cylinder will be returned to the customer, who must sign a acknowledgement release form.

What causes a cylinder failure?

The most common reasons a cylinder fails is not necessarily during the hydro test itself. Most fail during the visual inspections that take place before or after testing. The most common reasons are internal and/ or external  dents, excessive rust, gouges, or other deformities. Failures that take place during hydrostatic testing is due to excessive expansion resulting from the pressure applied during the test, exceeded the REE requirements, or ruptures.
